Day 1- $1 a day

My faith community holds a potluck on the first Sunday of every month. This was good news because a potluck held the promise of a variety of foods on the first day of my experiment. This was bad news because I was fretting over what to contribute to the pot without spending too much of my $1 a day.

I purchased a 10 pound bag of potatoes for the bargain price of $1.97, and then roasted several of those babies with a little olive oil and some rosemary that I nicked off a bush down the block. So I contributed a mediocre bowl of roasted potatoes. At the potluck I got to eat a chicken leg, tomato and cucumber salad, chili with shredded cheddar and tortilla chips, bread, and fruit salad. As the fierce Native American said to Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves, “Good trade.”

  1. Just so you know I enjoyed the potatoes.

  2. Yes, good catch. I did buy a little jar of olive oil in bulk, ie. bring your own jar... I have a big bottle of olive oil in my cupboard, but my rules are that I can't use that.
